MOWING

When the grass is chest high, how are you supposed to feel good?’ – Detroit resident Pam Weinstein

Detroit is new Wild West. Lack of infrastructure and facilities resulting from economic crisis left citizens to fend for themselves amidst the chaos. One element they are able to control is nature.

In spring 2010, the city of Detroit began cutting back on cutting grass. The new budget stripped funds alloted to maintain grass fields and empty lots throughout the city. Because of massive shrinkage (population decline), there are many empty lots.
A noticeable trend emerged downtown. Residents began landscaping abandoned city property. They mowed their own lawns, and also the lawns attached to abandoned houses nearby.

The city of Utrecht (NL) uses sheep to keep the grass tidy along the dikes.
Detroit could impart this strategy to maintain large areas of abandoned property, or re-train unemployed workers as herders.
