[Detroit 2010]

STEAM

Detroit has a lot of steam. It is a beautiful and intriguing sight. We investigated the origins of these smokeclouds.

The steam eminates from an expansive pipe system cooling and heating it's buildings. In the past gas was burned to produce steam. In the 1980's the city decided to embark on a prestigeous project by building the biggest incinerator in the world. From then on, steam was produced by burning trash.

Two years after it's completion, facing a budget deficit, the city sold the incinerator to Phillip Morris, and Aviation services (a subsidiary of General Electric). They also signed deal obliging the city to buy a fixed amount of steam from the incinerator until 2010. Unfortunately, the city didn't need so much steam; but the deal was sealed.

As a result, Detroit has to buy trash from other cities to keep the incinerator burning, producing steam they do not need in order to meet the assigned quota. Even curbside recycling was prohibited (until recently) because all the trash was needed to feed the incinerator.

The Pink Pony Express experimented with alternative uses for the abundant steam points throughout the city.
