Podzemka

Disguised as ‘normal’ Russian women, we entered the subway carrying air-purifying house plants.
These same plants were used during Soviet times, to purify the air in submarines and spaceships, because they do not need sunlight to produce large amounts of oxygen.

In order to circumnavigate a law forbidding group manifestations in public space, we became ‘invisible’. Our large plants attracted suspicion, but because we were dressed like everyday Russian women, there were no solid grounds for the subway police to question our actions.

When exposed to strong airflows, these plants generate oxygen. In the past, they were used in combination with fans.
Underground, the subway train serves as the ventilator. We positioned ourselves – with plants – near the entrance of the tunnel, where the wind is at a maximum speed when the train arrives.
